Acupuncture – an alternative way to treat tension headaches

Most doctors and medical professionals, especially the ones that specialize in the pain management and treatment agree that the main cause of tension headaches can be contributed to the constriction of blood vessels in the muscles and tissue of the neck, head and face. Butalbital is often very effective in treating migraines and tension headaches because it’s able to produce a quick relaxing effect – both to the muscles and the central nervous system. Additionally, butalbital has an effect on the very nerves that transmit the pain signal, since it slows down the activity of nerves and neurotransmitters. And although Butalbital can be an effective treatment for tension headaches on its own, it works best when combined with additional substances that further enhance and compliment it’s effects. Studies have shown that the best way to treat tension headaches is with a combination of Butalbital, Caffeine and Acetaminophen. When used together in this combination, the trio can quickly ease the discomfort and pain caused by the headache.

Butalbital has been in use for decades as an effective painkiller, especially for moderate to severe migraines and headaches. It’s a recommended alternative to the patients who don’t respond well to NSAIDs (Non-steroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs) like ibuprofen, opioids and other well known pain killers. The popularity of the Butalbital is best understood with the help of statistics. Studies have shown that over twenty percent of the global population experiences at least one occurrence of a tension headaches every month. Furthermore, over four percent – that’s one in every twenty five people – suffer from chronic tension headaches that strike more often than twice per week.  In these, chronic tension headache cases, the intensity and the frequency of the pain often increases in times of stress and emotional issues. The headaches often last for longer than several hours, and can be triggered by a variety of internal, psychological or environmental factors. These include anxiety, stress, muscle tension in the neck and scalp area, reactions to caffeine, alcohol, food and nicotine, sunlight, loud noises, extreme temperatures, and a number of other causes. And although Butalbital is a well known and effective treatment for acute and chronic tension headaches and migraines, there a number of alternative approaches to the problem. One, somewhat exotic way of treating chronic pain has been gaining some traction and popularity, although its effectiveness is still largely disputed by the medical community. As you have probably guessed by know, we are talking about acupuncture.

Proponents of Acupuncture claim that it’s able to produce much of the results of Butalbital, and it’s supposed to be very safe and side effects free. The technique is based on the basic principles of traditional Oriental medicine. And while most agree that acupuncture is not necessary the first thing you should try, there’s really no harm in exploring your options. For some, acupuncture has turned out to be a viable addition, if not a replacement for Butalbital, Fioricet and other prescription drugs for the treatment of chronic headaches.
